Identity verification
Joining Mia Relay means proving you're a real, identifiable person — that's what keeps the network free of bots and impersonators. We use Stripe Identity (a quick photo of your ID plus a selfie) for a one-off £5 / €6, which covers up to three attempts in case a photo doesn't come out clearly. It's a one-time cost, never a subscription, and it doubles as another wall against spammers: a throwaway bot account isn't worth £5 and a verified identity.
The introduction deposit
When you start a conversation with someone you aren't already connected to, you attach a refundable deposit. You pick the amount each time — we default to £5 and accept anywhere from £1 to £25 per request.
If they accept, your deposit is returned in full, instantly. You're now connected
and all future calls and messages between you are free.
If they decline, half the deposit goes to the recipient and half stays with the
platform.
If they don't respond within 14 days, the deposit is returned to you in full.
The deposit maths, illustrated
Imagine you sent an introduction to ten old friends with a £5 deposit each. Nine accept, one ignores you and times out. You get £50 back — the entire £50 you staked. Net cost: zero.
Now imagine a spam call centre tries the same trick across 10,000 strangers, hoping to convert 1% into customers. 100 accept (deposits refunded). 9,900 decline. The spammer loses £2.50 for each of those 9,900 declines — that's £24,750 lost for a single morning of spam. And the 9,900 recipients have made £2.50 each for clicking decline.

Unlimited voice calls, video calls, text and group messaging between your verified contacts. Multi-device sync. End-to-end encrypted private messages. No data caps, no per-minute charges, no premium tiers hiding the encryption or the screening behind a paywall. The service is free for individuals; we make our money from organisations on Cloud and Enterprise plans, not from you.
Your deposits and your data
There's no subscription to cancel. Any deposits in escrow are returned to you when their response windows close. You can delete your account at any time from settings — we don't keep your message data afterwards.
